Mental toughness, skill that you really need

Do you sometimes feel weak inside? Do you feel suspensed or surprisedwhen somebody puts you down? Does anyone steps on your toes really easily? Do you have butterflies in your stomach sometimes? Do you sometimes think that you are permanently stressed? If you have answered to any of these questions Yes, then you should continue reading.

Mental toughness
Recently I've been reading few magazines, just like Forbes.com about sales and leadership, some other magazines from Slovakia and Czech Republic and found few interesting ideas that I was really familliar with. I think these are worth sharing. What is actually mental toughness? After googling for a while I have found few definitions that says: "Term commonly used by coaches, sport psychologists, sport commentators, and business leaders - generally describes a collection of attributes that allow a person to persevere through difficult circumstances (such as difficult training or difficult competitive situations in games) and emerge without losing confidence. (Wikipedia, Mental toughness, 11.7.2012)

From definition It's obvious that mental toughness is mostly needed by business leaders but more than that, by professional sportsmens. It's obvious. They're mostly in really tought difficult situtations in games and competitions. But what about regular human being just like you and me? In past few years of sales business that I've been to with my other half Jane, we have researched that most of the successful salespeople in our company were people, who actually had really hight sports performance. The top salespeople were usually really good sportsmen. Some sales companies recruit people that are from sports that require high endurance and persistance, that they used while performing sports. Well, how to develop this mental toughness ?

There is many ways that you might find arround on How to develop mental toughness or how to be mentally strong, but there is one correlation among most of them. I'll sum it up in couple points.

1. It's not about what happens to you but how you react to circumstances that happen to you. (responsiveness)
2. Most of the mentally tough people are good sportspeople. (high performers/sportsmanship)
3. Have positive self talk, and positive mental attitude under any circumstances (positive thinking)
4. Have goals in life and do not take yourself too seriously.
5. Laugh when someone makes you angry or nervous. It's about how you react!

It's nice to have all of them written down, but how to really develop them? How to be really mentally tough? How to make yourself calm even you feel streseed and worried?

Mental toughness
It's matter of time. It's process, that you need to be aware of every day under every circumstance. You need to practice. Yes, practice and never forget about it. There is one advice I can really give you and what makes me really mentally tough. Have a goals in life and have plan. Do not improvise on life. There is nothing that can hit as hard as life (Silvester Stalone, Rocky Balboa) Be ready and prepared even if something terrible happens to you, or when you lose job or when you can't find your job.

Do you think that you are mentally tough? Do you have any simillar stories that makes you mentally tough, or you think that you need to born to be mentally tough?
